Shapeshifter Brand Geirson was raised to rule the Broods of Fenrir, but he refused his birthright. Instead, he killed their brutal leader–his own father–and walked away. For hundreds of years he’s avoided brood society, until a werewolf kills an innocent human woman and Brand finds himself dragged back into the violent politics of the shapeshifters. When the two brood women who mean the most to him come under threat, he must take up the throne and risk becoming the kind of vicious bastard his father was, or let the broods descend further into chaos–taking the friend he swore to protect and his lover with them.

Broods of Fenrir is the tale of Brand, the would-be king of the werewolves, who has forsaken his crown to live a simpler life. Why would he do so? Because the people he would rule are little more than animals. Imagine the worst traits of mankind mixed with the pack mentality of canines. Not a pretty picture is it? Nor does Moore paint it as such. It's a brutal society where life is cheap and weakness is answered with suffering. Not even Brand himself is immune to these instinctual callings and, sadly for him, his family isn't quite ready to let him go.

Broods of Fenrir is a fast paced horror-thriller with strong characters and lots of werewolf on werewolf violence to keep the story moving along. I greatly enjoyed it from start to finish.

I do have a few critiques of this story, minor though they are. There are a few points in the tale where characters are introduced rapid fire, leading to a feeling of "Huh? Who's that and where did they come from?" My second critique is that this story is fairly short. The werewolves in this tale are immortal (or practically immortal) and there's a lot of history hinted at in the book. As a fan of the original Highlander, let me just say I love flashbacks. I would have liked to have seen a few more glimpses into their back story. On the other hand, the author definitely leaves herself with plenty of material for future books if such is her plan.

As a minor side note, I will just say that Broods of Fenrir is beautifully edited. Over the past couple of years, I've come to expect books (even professionally published) to have a few typos or formatting errors here and there. I don't think I spotted a single thing in this book. This doesn't' have anything to do with the story, but kudos to the author and her team for putting that little bit of extra polish into this.

All the werewolf angst you could possibly crave, wrapped in a grim, gritty adult setting.

Brand Geirson is a werewolf who runs a security company. He is also the son of the king of the broods but he killed his father and refused his birthright to become the next king. He stays to himself except for his friend Erik who is the earl of another brood and another friend named Alice who he rescued from a vicious attack by another werewolf. Things change when he is called to the scene of a homicide where a human woman was murdered and it looks like a werewolf attack. Ingrid tries to force him to mate with her daughter Dagny and Brand will end up having to take Alice and Dagny into his brood which he doesn't like because he's normally a loner. He will also get called before the conclave for killing Arn (who attacked Alice) and also for stealing Dagny from his half-brother's brood. He will have to choose between remaining a loner or taking his rightful place on the throne in hopes to change how things are in the broods.

This is book 1 of Broods of Fenrir. I will read just about anything with paranormal aspects in it and I really did enjoy this book which was a quick read. I especially liked the Norse references and feel to some of the characters. I would have to say that Alice took 1st place as my favorite character. She was vulnerable and weak at times but proved herself to be a fierce champion. I look forward to reading more in this series. I received this ebook free through LibraryThing Member Giveaways in exchange for an honest review.
I am a huge fan of fantasy in any shape, but especially when it comes to shifters. I can honestly say it's been a while since I came across one that made me excited for the genre again. Broods of Fenrir did just that, and I couldn't put it down! Now, this may sound cliched, but coming from me, it's not. Lately I've been picking up and putting down books like crazy because not many have held my interest.

This one did and then some!

Brand can be the King of the broods...if only he can step forward and take the crown. His sire, the previous king, was a viscous bastard of the worst degree. When Brand finally broke free of his father and killed him, he walked away from the throne, vowing never to take the position. Now, centuries later, he finally realizes that by turning his back on the throne, he turned his back on his people. Can he fix the clans, who are stuck in the past and treating women and weak members as slaves, or will he die trying?

I truly loved this book. The writing pulled me in from the very start. There's just something about Coral Moore's writing--it flows very easily, and makes the reader wish to continue. I'm definitely adding her books to my list in the future!

Brand's tale does have a bit of romance to it, but it doesn't take center stage all the time, and I was okay with that. I loved his possessiveness, not just to Dagny, but everyone under his protection. He could have easily been like his father, drunk on power but with no honor. Instead he became very much the perfect hero.

4 STARS! For a captivating shifter tale, one that pulls from old Norse tales a bit, Broods of Fenrir is sure to be a hit with fans of the genre! I will be recommending it to others, and I am anxious to read book two ,as I'm hoping many of the secondary characters pop up again, or better yet get their own tale!

I'm always up for a good shifter story and, to me, this is no different. Has the usual elements and works quite well for me.
